Downloading a Twitter (X) video on Android

Updated 2026-10-07

The iPhone version of this problem gets all the attention because of the Files-versus-Photos split. Android has its own quirks, and the most annoying one is a download that silently does nothing.

Getting the link from the X app

Open the post, tap the share arrow at the bottom right, and choose Copy link. On older versions of the app the same option sits behind the ⋯ menu at the top right instead.

One thing worth knowing: if the post contains several videos, the link is still a single post link. The downloader will show you each video it finds, and you pick.

Pasting it into a browser downloader

1
Switch to Chrome or your browser. The download happens in the browser, not in the X app.
2
Paste into the input.Long-press the field and choose Paste.
3
Start it, then tap the download link. The file is fetched from X's own servers, so speed depends on your connection, not on the tool.

Where the file goes on Android

Chrome writes to /storage/emulated/0/Download, which your file manager shows as Downloads. Most gallery apps index that folder automatically within a minute or two, so the video turns up in Photos without you doing anything.

Firefox and Samsung Internet behave the same way but may ask first. If a browser asks where to save and you pick somewhere unusual, that is on you to remember — it will not show up in the default gallery afterwards.

When the download silently does nothing

This is the Android-specific annoyance. You tap download, the progress bar appears, and then nothing lands in Downloads.

  • Storage permission. Some browsers need "Files and media" permission to write outside their own sandbox. Grant it and retry.
  • Downloads paused. Chrome will quietly queue a download if it thinks you are on a metered connection. Check the download list inside the browser, not the system one.
  • Data Saver. The "Lite mode" / Data Saver setting in Chrome can block downloads over mobile data. Switch it off for the retry.
  • The video is a live stream. Recorded broadcasts work; an active live stream does not.
If the file downloads but will not play, check the file size first. A few hundred kilobytes for a three-minute video means the download was interrupted — usually a proxy or a VPN cutting the connection partway.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an app to download X videos on Android?

No. The browser route works and does not need storage permissions beyond the download itself, which is one reason to prefer it over an APK.

Why does Chrome say the file is dangerous?

It flags media downloads from unfamiliar domains by default. The file is an MP4 from X's CDN. You can allow it for the site if you download often.

Can I download a video from a private X account?

No. If you cannot see the post while logged in, no tool can fetch it, and anything claiming otherwise wants your credentials.

Where exactly is the file on Android?

Usually the Downloads folder at the root of internal storage. Open the Files app and look under Downloads.

Paste the link, get the file

Works in Chrome, Firefox and Samsung Internet on any Android version. No app, no sign-in.
