X does not do this for you
There used to be a "Save as GIF" option in the share menu. It disappeared, and what replaced it is nothing — the platform would rather you repost than export.
So the workflow is always the same two steps, whether it happens in a web tool or on your own machine: get the video file, then convert it.
Why GIF is a downgrade, not a sidegrade
A GIF has a hard limit of 256 colours per frame and no audio track at all. A video that looked fine on X will look banded and slightly muddy as a GIF, especially in gradients and skies.
That is not a tool problem. It is what the format is. If you want something that looks like the original, an MP4 that loops is a better choice in almost every case — and it is also much smaller.
The route that works
ffmpeg -i in.mp4 -vf "fps=12,scale=480:-1" out.gif is the one-line version. Lower the fps and width if the file is still too big.How long a clip can realistically be
File size grows fast. Rough guide at 480px wide and 12 frames per second:
- 3 seconds — around 1 MB, fine everywhere
- 10 seconds — around 3–4 MB, still shareable
- 30 seconds — 10 MB and up, and most chat apps will re-compress it anyway
If you need longer, you do not actually want a GIF. You want a short MP4.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a way to get a GIF straight from X?
Not from the platform itself. The share menu offers a copy-link option only, and any site offering instant GIF conversion is doing the download and the conversion behind the scenes.
Why does my GIF have no sound?
Because the format has no audio channel at all. If sound matters, export an MP4.
Can I convert on a phone?
Yes, but expect a quality and size penalty from mobile converters. Downloading on a phone and converting on a computer gives better results.
Start with the video file
Fetch the MP4 first, then convert it however you like. The download is the part that needs a tool.
