What the desktop site gives you
You can watch, reply, bookmark and repost. You cannot save someone else's video, and for your own posts the option is buried in the post menu on mobile only.
X has never explained this, but the pattern is familiar: media export is treated as a mobile feature, and the web client is built for reading and writing text.
Copying the post link
Click into the post so it opens on its own page — that also gives you a cleaner URL than the timeline version. Then either copy the address bar, or use the ⋯ menu on the post and choose Copy link.
Fetching the file
Where the file goes
- Windows:
C:\Users\<you>\Downloadsunless your browser asks first. - macOS:
~/Downloadsin Finder.
Both are the browser default rather than something the downloader chooses, so if you have changed your browser's download folder, that is where it will be.
When nothing happens
- Age-restricted posts. X will not serve the media without a logged-in session it trusts.
- Protected accounts. Same rule as everywhere: what you cannot see, you cannot fetch.
- Deleted posts. The media is gone from the CDN, and no tool keeps a copy.
- Corporate networks. Some proxies strip the media requests. Try a different connection.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a browser extension for this?
No, and it is worth avoiding one. Extensions that scrape X need permission to read every page you visit, and they break whenever the site changes its markup.
Does it work on both Windows and macOS?
Yes. The fetching happens on the tool's side, so only your browser matters.
Can I download several videos at once?
One post at a time. Where a single post contains multiple videos, they are all listed in one go.
No extension needed
Copy the post link, paste it in, get the MP4. Works in any desktop browser.
